The Drumcong girls ended their year on a high note on Monday evening June 9th when they defeated neighbours Drumshanbo in the primary school girls league final. They progressed through the league with convincing wins over Drumshanbo in the first round followed Drumlese, Carrigallen, Aughavas and Annaduff. So Drmcong and Drumshanbo were the top two teams to contest the final.
The game was played in Pairc Sean on a wet & windy Monday evening. Drumcong were hoping to make it 3 in a row, having won the final for the previous two years.
The final started with a goal in the first minute from mid-fielder Aine Tighe after Aoife McWeeney won the throw-in and passed it on. Drimshanbo were quick to reply with a goal from full-forward Aoife Barry. Both sets of backs were busy defending. Clodagh Foley scored the next point for Drumcong but Drumshanbo hit back with another goal. Drumcong’s mid-field pair were winning more possession and another point from Clodagh, followed by two Aoife McWeeney points, kept them even before Sinead Byrne found the net for her first goal, leaving it 2-4 to 2-0 at half-time. Claire Kelly kept Drumcong together at the back during this half
